4 ways to walk with God in the workplace

In this article I’d like to talk about 4 ways we can walk with God as we prepare our heart, mind and spirit for our workplace.

#1 Partner with God

The first and what I believe to be the most important concept to consider is to embrace the fact that you are partnering with God at your workplace.

God is with us at all times of the day, every moment we are awake and even as we sleep.  We approach God with so many areas of our lives so why not ask Him to walk alongside us in our workplace?

God wants us to live our lives but He delights in our dependence on Him and asking Him to guide us towards His will.  Each one of us has unique skills and attributes that God can use through us in our workplace.

Often we can think that our job is something we can do alone with no help from God, but we do not realize all of the ways He can work with us and for us behind the scenes if we invite Him into our work day.

So, I encourage you to consider that your workplace, no matter your position – be it an entry level role or a CEO – is an opportunity for you to partner with God.  It is an opportunity to allow Him to bless you with favor, influence and increase.  It is an opportunity for Him to ensure you are placed in the best possible circumstances that are aligned for His will for you in the role.

In partnering with God, you can be rest assured that your workplace experience is not limited to what you see and what you hear but also the outcomes that God is orchestrating for you behind the scenes with your co-workers including increase, protection and favor.

#2 Pray before you start your work

One of the most powerful things I have found in my walk with God is making sure to prioritize my partnership with God at my workplace by connecting with Him before I start a single thing.

If you had an important meeting at your workplace and your co-worker was a vital part of your presentation, knowing a myriad of facts and figures to be presented, would you start the meeting early without them? Probably not.

In the same way, I have found it to be so beneficial to pray with God before I lift a single finger about my job.  Each day, before reading a single email or Slack message.  Before making a single work related phone call, before starting my work I pray to God.

I thank Him for the job. I thank Him for the opportunity I have in the job.

I thank Him for partnering with me, advocating for me behind the scenes and orchestrating favor, influence and increase unbeknownst to me.

I thank Him for the opportunity to serve Him and be of service to others at my workplace.

Lastly, I ask Him to walk with me throughout the day.  This is a good opportunity to ask Him to accompany me for events I may know that are planned.  Perhaps an important meeting, a presentation, or working on an important project.  Asking God to be with me in these events I can be rest assured I am going to be equipped to be aligned with His will.

#3 Pray as needed throughout your workday

When we get into the thick of things at work, it can be very easy to forget our partnership with God.  Trust me – I get it.  I spend so much time reading emails, reviewing tasks and planning my projects.  I have to keep track of who told me what about whom and everything in between.

We know we have asked God to partner with us throughout the day and I believe it delights Him that we may take a break to ‘check in’ with Him in the middle of the day.

A boxer checks in with his coach between rounds.  A baseball player checks in with the coaches when they are in the dugout.  A football player checks in with the coaches during a time out or when they are not on the field. Why wouldn’t we check in with God during our workday?

What I have learned is to make time to ask the Holy Spirit to keep me aligned with God’s will and to help me stay focused on my work.  To ensure this takes place, I have setup an alarm on my phone that goes off midday Monday-Friday and I have an alarm to go off shortly after lunch to specifically ask for help to be focused on the remainder of my work for the day.

I cannot overstate how these two brief prayers have helped me maintain peace during the workday, alleviate stressors and quite frankly – help me to stay on task.

#4 Pray as you wrap up your work for the day

As our work day comes to a close, I want to encourage you to give praise and thanks to God for the elements of your day.

This is not to suggest that every single workday will be a positive one.  What I am saying is that we can STILL thank God in the midst of the stressors and difficult days.

Why, because we know that we have been praying throughout the day to be aligned with His will, to be equipped with what we need to do our job.

We can be rest assured that the events of the day, be it rewarding or stressful are anointed.

I want to talk a moment about stressful days.  You may ask – why am I having stressful days even though I am praying in all the ways we have talked about today?

It may be difficult to see God’s blessing in the stressful days but I can tell you from experience – sometimes the stress in the moment is necessary for God to orchestrate a much better outcome for you in response to your asking Him for favor and increase.

I have been in a situation where my stress on the job was occurring right alongside my praying over each day.  What I did not know at the time but would see much later is that the scenario was moving me to a door of far greater blessing.  Had the difficulties not occurred and had I not leaned on God to order my steps, I may not be reaping the joys in my workplace that I am now.
