Welcome to “Going Deeper with the Word.” In this segment, we welcome people of all backgrounds, religious or not, to review with me the Word of God. The Word of God provides guidance, direction, and instructions for living our lives and walking with God.
Today, we examine how God’s Word provides clear guidance and direction about finding our faith language.
Let’s review examples of God’s Word that can lead and guide our steps and back up the principles we learned in today’s message. I will be reading scripture today from the Amplified Bible.
Here is our first verse:
Search me [thoroughly], O God, and know my heart;
Test me and know my anxious thoughts;
And see if there is any wicked or hurtful way in me,
And lead me in the everlasting way.
– Psalm 139:23-24 AMP
I chose this verse to describe the posture we can take when we make time for silence with God. We offer ourselves in silence, surrendering ourselves – our whole selves. We expose our thoughts and feelings to God willingly in these moments, intentionally vulnerable. When we can offer ourselves in this way to our Creator, we can truly find intimacy with God. In this intimate setting, God can touch our hearts and minds at such a time that we are open to receiving.
I truly recommend investing quiet time each day with God. There are no rules – just do your very best to be still and clear your mind. I recommend researching the subject of contemplative prayer which examines this practice of silence and stillness in prayer in great detail.
Do you spend quiet time with God? How does it make you feel?
Let’s have a look at another verse.
“When I see and consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have established,”
– Psalm 8:3 AMP
In this verse, we see a reference to the majesty and awe of nature. We can find so much joy in connecting with God when we immerse ourselves in nature all around us. Personally, I love the forests of redwoods and the rugged coastlines of California. In either of these places, I truly feel a sense of connection with God, knowing He has created all that I can see.
What is your happy place in nature?
Let’s look at one last verse.
You will show me the path of life;
– Psalm 16:11 AMP
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are pleasures forevermore.
In this verse, we see an example of a train of thought that might occur during careful and mindful reflection. Reflection is an important way to review our past and consider what we have learned. Living life in and of itself is a constant process of learning. When we consider the path of our faith, we have an opportunity to review what we have specifically learned from our walk with God.
Often, the closer we find ourselves to God, the more we learn in ways that the world does not provide or offer. For example, we can learn about kindness, selflessness, and compassion in God’s Word and in our walk with God – more so than we could if we did not have God in our lives.
Do you find reflection a helpful way to connect with God?
Finding your faith language can be an exciting journey. I encourage you to explore ways to cultivate a strong connection with God. He will meet you where you are when you seek connection with Him. Finding your faith language with God will help to ensure that you can connect with God every day for the rest of your days.
