Welcome to “Going Deeper with the Word.” In this segment, we welcome people of all backgrounds, religious or not, to review the Word of God with me. The Word of God provides guidance, direction, and instructions for living our lives and walking with God.
Today, we examine how God’s Word provides clear guidance and direction about doubts and disbelief in our faith.
Let’s review examples of God’s Word that can lead and guide our steps and back up the principles we learned in today’s message. I will be reading scripture today from the Amplified Bible.Â
Here is our first verse:
Immediately the father of the boy cried out [with a desperate, piercing cry], saying, “I do believe; help [me overcome] my unbelief.”
– Mark 9:24 AMP
This verse gets right to the heart of our message. It reveals the nature of our humanness to disbelieve and that we may need help in confronting our doubts. In this verse and this chapter, we witness the reality of most of us if not all of us at some point in our lives. A reality where we have either no belief or partial belief until we find ourselves in dire straits. Thankfully, God is kind, God is compassionate, and God gives us grace even if we only trust Him at the very last minute. God does reward the faithful, but He will not abandon those who call upon Him. That being said, God loves us more than we can possibly imagine. We should also seek Him not just when things go wrong or are about to go wrong, but also as we live out our moments day to day.
Let’s have a look at another verse.
So faith comes from hearing [what is told], and what is heard comes by the [preaching of the] message concerning Christ.
– Romans 10:17 AMP
In this verse, we are reminded of the importance of relying upon God’s Word for guidance and direction in our faith. Jesus Christ teaches us how to live our lives and how to depend on Him for all things. We must learn to lean on God’s Word not just as a resource but as the source of truth for our lives as we navigate both good and challenging times in our lives.
Let’s look at one last verse.
All Scripture is God-breathed [given by divine inspiration] and is profitable for instruction, for conviction [of sin], for correction [of error and restoration to obedience], for training in righteousness [learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately—behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage];
– 2 Timothy 3:16 AMP
This verse very clearly explains that God’s Word is truly direct from Him. Breathed into the authors of Scripture for inspiration and instruction. Take note of all of the ways this verse explains that God’s Word is meant to direct us – conviction, correction, and training. In every way, God’s Word provides us with everything we need to know about living our lives and walking with God.
Overcoming doubt and disbelief can be a challenge. I believe it can be a combination of reasoning and logic as well as faith. God understands our doubts and will work with us where we are, but we still need to make that step toward Him to learn and grow in faith and trust. Wherever you are in your walk with God, if there are any doubts in your heart I encourage you to make that step toward God, asking Him to help you with your doubt and to learn of His will for you. By following His will, we can truly be led to His best-laid plans for us.
