Welcome to “Going Deeper with the Word.” In this segment, we welcome people of all backgrounds, religious or not, to review the Word of God. The Word of God provides guidance, direction, and instructions for living our lives and walking with God.
Today, we examine how God’s Word provides clear guidance and direction about guidance on our journey with God.
Let’s review examples of God’s Word that can lead and guide our steps and back up the principles we learned in today’s message. I will be reading scripture today from the Amplified Bible.
If you are watching this message online, we invite you to share your comments as we review each verse.
Here is our first verse.
All Scripture is God-breathed [given by divine inspiration] and is profitable for instruction, for conviction [of sin], for correction [of error and restoration to obedience], for training in righteousness [learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately—behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage]; so that the [a]man of God may be complete and proficient, outfitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.
2 Timothy 3:16-17
In this verse, we dive into the authenticity of God’s Word. Disciple Timothy explains that scripture is -derived- from God. Often, God speaks through authors of scriptures to bring guidance and direction and instructions on living a life of righteousness and godliness. Scripture leads us, guides us, and provides timeless instruction on how to live life honorably and with our hearts and minds toward God versus in the world.

Let’s have a look at another verse.
The way of the [arrogant] fool [who rejects God’s wisdom] is right in his own eyes,
But a wise and prudent man is he who listens to counsel.
Proverbs 12:15
In this verse, King Solomon remarks on the wisdom that comes from being willing to listen to counsel, instead of the ‘foolish’ behavior of seeing himself/herself as the only one who is right. It is a truly powerful thing when we seek to -not- be the wisest person in a room, because it provides an atmosphere to learn and grow.
Question: Can you recall a nugget of wisdom offered to you by an individual that has stayed with you over time? What was the advice? Share with us in the comments.
Let’s look at one last verse.
In the same way the Spirit [comes to us and] helps us in our weakness. We do not know what prayer to offer or how to offer it as we should, but the Spirit Himself [knows our need and at the right time] intercedes on our behalf with sighs and groanings too deep for words.
Romans 8:26
In this verse, Apostle Paul explains that in prayer, the Holy Spirit intercedes for us on our behalf when we don’t know what to pray. I illustrate this verse because there are times that our circumstances are too heavy, even for words. Even in this situation, we still will receive guidance through prayer. I believe that a large part of our relationship with God is the posture of our hearts. It is one thing to sit idle and not approach God. It is a very different thing to have the trust and faith in God to -approach- Him – even if we don’t know what to say. This scripture reveals that in these moments, we need not worry because the Holy Spirit is with us and will help us with our petitions before God.
Question: Can you think of a time that you were so overcome with grief or pain or overwhelm that you didn’t know what words to speak to God in prayer, but you approached Him in silence anyway? In retrospect, what do you believe the Holy Spirit conveyed to God on your behalf? Share in the comments.
Our journey with God and a walk of faith is an adventure that brings us to new levels of enlightenment, joy, and peace. Often, we don’t know what we don’t know, but the good news is that God knows this – and will lead and guide our steps as we walk with Him.
God will use counsel to provide us with the words we need to hear. He will respond to our prayers asking for help and assistance, and His Word provides timeless direction and instruction for all generations past, present and future.
Trust God with every step of your journey with Him. He will always be near when you keep your heart and mind turned to Him.
